After graduating from college, I taught third grade in Fluvanna County and Albemarle County Schools while I attended the University of Virginia where I obtained my MEd in English. Since then I have received my MFA from Lesley University. Throughout my career, I have been engaged in reading, writing, and teaching English.
Currently, I write and teach writing classes at Marymount University and the Writer's Center in Bethesda, MD. Before joining the Marymount faculty, I worked in the Education Department at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC. My position as Director of the Folger Shakespeare Student Festival Project was funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Under this grant, I traveled throughout the United States holding workshops for elementary and high school teachers on teaching Shakespeare. After leaving the Folger, I joined the staff of Columbia Books as an editor.
I published a picture book, The New Puppy, with Random House (voted best children's book of the year by the National Dog Writers' Association of America) and three non-fiction books on dog breeds for TFH Publications. I worked as a freelance writer for National Geographic in the educational department and my articles have appeared in magazines such as Appleseeds, Calliope, Science Weekly, Renaissance, The World & I, Dog Fancy, Scholastic Magazine Teachers' Guide, Kennel Review, Pure-Bred Dogs/American Kennel Gazette, Dogs in Canada and D Magazine.
